Perfect progress photos - Two images of a woman during her weight- loss journey One of the best ways to measure progress is by documenting it. Ask your Mum, we’re sure she can dig out that picture of you taking your first steps, taking your first punt at acting in the Christmas play as Angel number 1 and that time you were finally tall enough to ride the log flume. Pictures capture more than a moment, they tell a story about how far you’ve come!

Why do you take fitness progress photos?

When members join SKPT, one of the first things they’re asked to do is take progress photos so that they can look back and see the distance travelled whenever they get a moment of feeling down, beat or like they’re getting nowhere with their fitness journey. It’s completely natural to feel overwhelmed at the thought of what you want to achieve. So taking progress photos, or pictures that can help you more accurately capture those physical changes that don’t always show on the scales is one of the most gratifying ways to see that you have actually come further than you think.

They also help you stay accountable, you can show them to someone that you’ve shared your fitness goal with and help you make a plan every couple of months if there is a group of muscles or a particular body area you want to try a different approach to transform.

So how do you take them?

The best way to capture your fitness progress and the NSV’s (non-scale victories) is to:

  • Wear the same outfit – a good sports bra and shorts or gym leggings that can capture the physical transformation
  • Use the same backdrop, preferably in a full-length mirror
  • Take a photo against a good, clear well- lit backdrop
  • Three angles – front, side and back
  • Take one set of photos whilst relaxed and one whilst tensing if you prefer
  • Repeat every 4-6 weeks and store them in a folder for you to visit whenever you need that push!

And, how do progress photos help?

You know that flow of dopamine you get when you fall into the black hole of cute dog pictures when you feel down and the way they make you feel more positive again. Well, think about that feeling, but instead of cute pets, you’re getting that release of the happy hormone looking at pictures of your cute self and marvelling at the place you are now and how far it is from where you started. Not only are progress photos a testament to your hard work, but they also confirm that slow and steady always wins the race! Now get that gym gear on and get snap happy, just think about where you’ll be a couple of months from now.
